Jane Zweibel

Acrylic painting
I am a multi-disciplinary artist originally from Colorado. I moved to Philadelphia in 2009 to attend Graduate school at Drexel where I completed an MS in Fashion Design. Since then I've explored many art mediums including leatherwork, jewelry making, illustration, stained glass, ceramics, and more! In 2020 my mother, who is a ceramic artist, began painting and encouraged me to join her-- so I set up an art space in my home and we began painting together over facetime (it was the early days of the pandemic, and she lives over 1,000 miles away in Florida). More recently I've moved my work into a dedicated art studio space in Philadelphia where I spend my days working and creating with my dog by my side. I'm a self-taught painter still working on finding my unique voice and style-- but some things that are certain are my love for bold color and shapes!

Three questions on inspiration with

Jane Zweibel

  • Describe an object that has inspired you
I am inspired by the work of Alexander Calder. His mobiles are playful and bright and I love their movement and balance. I adore his use of irregular shapes, and his charming jewelry and sculptures.
  • Describe a place that has inspired you
The most notable place that has inspired my work is anything and everything I can see from an airplane window. I love to see the miniaturized landscapes, shapes, and colors that are visible from so high in the air. The best thing I've seen from an airplane are the salt ponds in San Francisco bay-- they are enormous irregularly shaped ponds of unbelievable color! They are amazing to see from the sky.
  • Describe a person that has inspired you
I am inspired by the work of Sonia Delaunay. I adore her use of shape and color, and love how her work translates so wonderfully into fashion, illustration, and textiles. Her work is bold, colorful, and so expressive-- I love it!
